Minoan Palatian Centers Cultural Tour

“Out in the dark blue sea there lies a land called Crete, a rich and lovely land, washed by the waves on every side densely peopled and boasting ninety cities. Each of the several races of the island has its own language. First there are the Achaeans, then the native Cretans, proud of their native stock, next the Kydonians, the Dorians, with their three clans, and finally the noble Pelasgians. One of the ninety towns is a great city called Cnossus, and there King Minos ruled and every nine years conversed with mighty Zeus…” (Homer, The Odyssey, translated by E. V. Rieu)

Our tour includes KnossosPhaistos, Malia and the Heraklion Archaeological museum.

The magnificent palace-city of Knossos, which is located 5 km southeast of Heraklion, the monumental symbol of Minoan civilization and came to light by Sir Arthur Evans.

Knossos, the foremost city in Crete from Neolithic times down through the Bronze Age, like all the other Minoan cities, had no fortifications and it was a thriving maritime power.

The Palace stood four floors high and had architectural feats that are almost unparalleled for their time. There were building complexes with large courts, staircases, colonnades, paved roads and different areas with functions like administration, storage, distribution with religious centers, workshops for specialist craftsmen, running water and excellent plumbing and drainage systems, with light and air flow control.

The living quarters were luxurious, decorated with magnificent frescoes, with bathrooms and flushing toilets.

The palace of Phaistos – one of the most important, wealthy and powerful centers of the Minoans – with its unique architectural composition and its almost perfect construction is considered to be the finest and most typical Minoan palaces.

The most important monuments of the site are:

  • The Palaces (old and new) which are built of ashlar blocks
  • The Minoan city covered a considerable area around the palatial centre.
  • The Venetian church of St. George of Phalandra which lies to the west of the palace

The archaeological site is located 62 km south of Heraklion.

The palace of Malia is located on the north coast of Crete about 37 km east of Heraklion.

It is the third-largest Minoan palace and was, according to mythology, the seat of Sarpedon, the third son of Zeus and Europa and the youngest brother of the legendary king Minos.

The palace of Malia, dating from the Middle Bronze Age was destroyed by an earthquake in around 1700 BC and rebuilt in 1650 BC at the same site.

The largest part of the ruins visible today belongs to the New Palace period.

The finds which uncovered through excavations are exhibited in the Museum of Herakleion, and some in the Museum of Aghios Nikolaos.

The museum, located in the center of the city, is one of the largest and most important museums in Greece, among the most important museums in Europe and the best in the world for Minoan art.

It houses representative artifacts from all the periods of Cretan prehistory and history, covering a chronological range of over 5,500 years from the Neolithic period to Roman times
